This is a post re- the subject of scenarios.
I haven't actually played these published scenarios, but they do look
interesting to me, and I think good scenarios could really provide
another dimension to the game.
The scenarios I previously mentioned were the five from WD 172.
I suppose the best thing to do would be to scan them, make them into PDF
files and post them, but unfortunately I don't
have that facility at the moment. I'd like to contribute to the group
though, and if there is sufficient interest I can
type them out maybe for Incomming. I'm not sure how much I'm preaching
to the converted, alot of you appear to have these old WD's anyway.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has already tried any of them
out.
There appear to be 4 sources of alternate scenarios published for 2nd
ed.
1. The scenarios I'm talking about are named Rescue Operation, a Bridge
Too Far, Flank Attack, Capture and Hold, and Breakout.
Do these sound familiar? I'm guessing that they might have been
re-worked without too much change for the 3rd ed Battles Book?
2. Another variation on the idea of scenarios was in WD 196 which came
with alternate objective counters.
Each player randomly picks 6 of them from his 12. There are six types.
Take & Hold(as normal), Assault, Capture, Rescue, Cleanse, and Bombard.
I'm guessing that these were worked into 3rd ed too? Though I have no
idea.
3. From the great list of WD's posted by Peter Ramos I can see issue
195 had scenarios too, but I don't have them.
4. I also found a mention of the Assault rules that were, apparently,
in the old Space Marines Battles book (that I don't have either).
Apparently all the objective counters were placed behind the defenders
battle lines, but counted for double points. Netepic has rules for
fortifications but I don't remember these Assault rules that might go
well with them.
All these possibilities sound interesting to me, but I can see how game
balance could be affected. With objective counters for example it looks
like there could be times when the luck of the draw means you get the
objective counters that exactly suit your army, and not the enemy. It
could be the equivalent of drawing a 'Brilliant Strategy' card. I agree
with a post I read that said any brilliant strategy should be reflected
through play, as much as possible, not through lucky windfalls. Maybe
picking and laying the objectives before choosing the armies might
lessen this affect. It should't be too hard to ensure balance though,
surely?
Anyway if people think the topic of scenarios is worth addressing -
these articles look like a good starting point, and I'm willing to write
something up in a form that people can use.
