Yes, in the old " 'er we go!" ork book they give this history about a fungus they ate being their source of intelligence and power. The ork slaves ate it too and realized its value. One day they ate it all and the devolved to present day snotlings.

    The brain boys didn't die out, they are snotlings the fungs they ate to make them intelligent died out (I think the orks ate it all) I am sure thats in some seriously old fluff
