A reactor that can never be shut down would never be
allowed to operate in the first place!
Agreed it defies logical sense but in several places it says that once
started there is no way to stop it with out blowing it up.
The main mission in the GW book 13th legion is to destroy the main plasma
reactor to an entire hive.
I just gotta ask - what the hell is the main power
supply if a plasma reactor gets relegated to backup
duty? :)
If think it is a bigger plasma reactor as in the fluff for Ishar IV in the
old Tyranid codex the Arbites storm them once the preceint houses are
captured, and that certain important buildings are given there own supply.
Despite what
Hollywood tells us, it is almost impossible to get
that sort of reaction from a half-decent reactor.
Not even if the control rods are removed for long enough to cause an
unstable chain reaction. Ignoring Hollywood but I think that is all it took
for Chernobyl to go. And I believe all the horror stories about the decrepit
state of Russian reactors are fairly recent in origin.

Yes, but they are supposed to be incredibly rare. You
only used to get one vortex per game for your entire
army!

Yes indeed, the vibro cannon would be a serious
demolisher of buildings. Or more accurately, two
Vibro cannons working together.

If you took a whole classroom of screaming kids, wound
them up to 78rpm with a truckload of chocolate easter
eggs and set them loose in a modern nuclear power
facility, with instructions to trash the place, they
still couldn't make it blow up. Despite what
Hollywood tells us, it is almost impossible to get
that sort of reaction from a half-decent reactor.
As I said, my main problem with this is game balance.
I once pointed out to Rick Priestley (ah nostalgia,
this was back in the good old days of Rogue Trader)
that for 250pts you could have an off-board support
missile with a 9" radius Vortex warhead - he replied,
"I love it! But I would never allow it in one of my
games."
Nuclear warheads do not exist in either 40K or Epic
for a very good reason - as soon as you set one off,
the game is over and EVERYBODY dies.
