Hi!
HA! I can top that and with extra cheese to boot. Long ago in RT days I
used to play 40k (<gasp>, yes it's true) and I participated in a
tournament where everything goes up to 2000 points.
I played SM and brought two figures to the board. One terminator squad
with a librarian and another leader type I used as spotter. The rest of
my points were spent on off the table ordinance. A single Vortex missile
worth one thousand points (according to SM you could spend up to 50% of
your points in ordinance).
The first game I lost initiative and waited on the far end of the field,
my opponent fielded a all dreadnought/robot army with power fields
encompassing his force. He didn't do much but he killed one terminator.
My turn, I spotted scattered and fired my mega-missile. The radius of
the missile was 21/2 feet! A gapping hole was left in his side of the
table, his entire army destroyed.
To this day it is STILL talked about.
No wonder I don't play that game no more.

New Imperial units
Most memorable vortex moment: way back in the early
days of 1st Ed, I had a marine with an autocannon who
was attacked by a dreadnought. The dredd had a
lascannon so the marine was pretty much doomed. But
he ran behind a nearby vortex field and used it as
hard cover! The dredd couldn't shoot through it, and
the odds of survival from random vortex movement were
a lot higher than facing up to the dredd. The marine
survived for three rounds, peering out from behind the
vortex and shooting his AC at the dredd, before the
dredd went off in search of other prey. The vortex
never moved, and the marine lived to fight another
day!
-----> Mine was in a 5K game My chaos and a friends Orks against 2 SM
players. My Veteran chaos space marines with Aspiring champion carrying
vortex grenade and my friends Blood axe commando Kaptian also carrying
vortex grenade set up in a fortress right in front of our opponents
commander, who happened to be Marneus Calgar, a load of bikes and a
dreadnought. Very little of that group survived past the first turn with
both Calgar and the dreadnought catching Vortex grenades.
