My thoughts were that since they are basically commando forces, used to make
make hit and run attacks and such, they would carry explosives, krak bombz
and similar, enabling them to assault titans as an elite unit.
Besides, I think the orks should have the option of having an elite unit in
their ranks and kommandos are rare enough to warrant it

This is how they were represented in the 2nd Ed aswell. Each individual
Commando was laden down with a bolter, frag + krak grenades, bolt pistol and
a power axe + as I think they were as hard as a SM veteran. It is easily
conceivable that they would carry more powerful explosives to represent the
larger targets in Epic.
