The EpicA's system works just about fine, IMHO.
2d6 roll, take the highest die,
+1 for each casualty inflicted,
+1 if you outnumber the enemy,
+1 (additional) if you outnumber the enemy at least 2:1,
Highest score wins assault and may move 5cm in any direction, loser
withdraws at charge rate.
Simpler that that...
