I would have to agree. It makes it too easy to single out units like
the chapolain or others than augments close combat or morale if that
particular restriction is lifted.

As for the rest, I have been trying for years to add something extra
to the close combat mechanics. All have failed either due to
unforseen balance issues or extreme clunkiness of the design.

As I have mentioned before, I think the game mechanics cannot
withstand much in the way of change or addition without undue
effects. For better or for worse a lot of it needs to remain
abstract.

Once I understood that, then I just made up systems from scratch to
emulate one thing or another (thats how Heresy was born). So I think
the general mechanics have reached a point where they are pretty uch
fixed. However, one can add units to it (within reason), which is
where I think most of the additions to netepic will come from.
