Re: [NetEpic ML] Future of Mailing List

For:
- Better organization: Easiness to find old messages and threads.
- (usually) More available space than most mail accounts. This can change with the new politics from the big free mail servers.
- Better layout than boring text messages :-)

Against:
- Less robustness than a mail based system. If the forum server is (probably) less reliable than yahoogroups we may find the forum down sometimes and unable to send messages. Forums require webmasters to administer them, which in most non-profit pages tend to leave pages disattended with time (not in all cases, fortunately). I've seen too many forums and web pages gone down in this way while some still keep up.
- Messages will be only available online whereas in a mailing list you can have them in your computer to look at all the time. Each time you want to read a message you have to connect / spend bandwidth. If you are offline you have no old netepic info. Is there any forum program that allows you to download new messages into a mail program or something alike? This could be a nice solution.

Unless someone convinces me so, I'm for keeping the mailing list. These two drawbacks are too much IMHO The robustness is critical.

Albert

  Hi!

Forum format like the one at Epicomms, Miniatures page and others have become an increasingly popular and effective means of communications for fans of any particular topic.

I would like opinions regarding if perhaps we should move to such a forum (the Epicentre has had one for some time), since mailing list traffic is becoming less and less.

Express your view for and against.

  Peter
