Actually, I would take the 2 Fords, the Ferarris have too many problems. I
think what Hellreich is getting at is he doesn't want some to field the best
units in a small game because this comes down to what WHFB is. The player
with the strongest character will win everytime. In our group we try to play
balanced armies. By balanced we try to keep infantry and vehicle-sized units
and up to a 50-50 composition and actually it works out more like 60-40.
This stops gamers from abusing powerful units and makes them think more
about what units they have available to them. You are right that you can
choose whatever units you like but the game is more interesting when both
armies are balanced. Cannon fodder vs. the creme de le creme? The cannon
fodder will be destroyed everytime. But if you mix this you get a balanced
army that employs more tactics rather than sit back and shoot and then go in
for objectives. Just because both armies are balanced doesn't mean their
firepower is matched. Try playing against an IG Capitol Imperilis loaded
with a heavy weapons company and a rough rider company, a super heavy tank
company, some artillery and little fodder. A Slaughter everytime. The player
uses the same tactics and I haven't seen this army lose yet. I think this is
what he means by powergamer. One who uses special or rare units in small
games and relies on them to put the balance in their favor. The army I was
talking about is played in 3000 pt games and I came close once to beating
it. For me it is the challenge of taking on this kind of army with a
balanced army and winning.
