Tactical marines are IMHO some of the best, most versatile assault troups in
the game! I think the best offensive tactic for the Marines would be to
single out a couple of VP's they really want, and use the Tacticals to
capture these as fast as possible. Then dig in! Keep a fast moving reserve
of Landspeeders, Bikes or Assaulttroops a 20 something cm behind your
firstline infantry, to reinforce your "strongpoints" if the enemy is about
to overhwelm them! Remember to give your troops a decent firesupport of
devestators or Whirlwinds!
 
For smaller games I thend to prefer to use battlecompanies, because the have
all the different units I need, but I agree with Eivind that the Assaults
sometimes is not fulfilling their roles, so one could take a tactical
company and support it with a detachment of Assaults and Devestators.....

I use the tac SM much more than any other troops because I find the very
versatile, they have great range, good CAF and of course, we play by the
rule that any weapon can down a shield. I usually prefer the tacs over the
assaults because I dont think their +3 CAF over +2 CAF justifies the loss of
25 cm weaponrange.
 
Quite frankly, I think the price should go down for the assault company (650
would be OK) or the CAF should go up to +4 That way they could start being
usefull....

I haven't taken a look to slann rules deeply, so I'm not gonna talk about
Kroxxigors or whatever they are called.
 
Yesterday I was talking with a friend of mine about Cheese and Chaos, as
lately there has been some discusion about it on the list (which I agree is
good, Peter ;-) ), and we concluded that Chaos Space Marines are a bargain
so,
 
I'm going to talk about the cheapest unit in Space Marine: Chaos Marines
Chapter (old card)
 
First of all, I have to notice that Chaos Space Marines chapter cards don't
have break point nor morale value which I think this is more important to
have printed on the card, than troop stats which anyway is also on the book.
 
But all of you that find kroxxigors too cheap take a look to Chaos Marines
vs a company of tactical SM:
 
Tactical SM (SM for now on) and Chaos Marines (CM for now on) have the same
move, same armour save, same weapon range and same number of attack dice(and
same morale value? well, there are some who are more or less inmune to
demons).
 
All other stats are clearly favoring CM:
 - +3 CAF vs +2 CAF
 - 4+ to hit vs 5+ to hit
 - -1 STM vs 0 STM
 - elite unit vs "normal" unit
 - special company power vs no special power
 - 500 points for 15 stands plus a Chaos Champion vs 600 points for 18
stands plus a HQ unit (I removed 150 points from rhinos)
 - 150 points for 5 stands (150/5=30 points for every stand!!!) vs 200
points for 6 stands (200/6=33,3 points for every stand!!!)(without rhinos
(+50 points))
 
I rarely see Tactical SM being used (because of their poor shooting -they
can't even be used to take down shields-, their comparative low CAF -Assault
are equally priced- and little specialization. If any Marine player has used
them in more than 5 battles he could tell me) but I think they are correctly
priced. I DO NOT think Chaos Marines are correctly priced, they should cost
at least 650 points the company and 225 the support card. Also, look at IG
support company: same number of stands, same STM, same move, aprox. same to
hit probability (1 dice 4+=50%, 2 dice 5+=56%), much lesser morale, Chain of
command rule, less CAF, no elite, no special power, the only good point to
IG is weapon range (is it really worth a plus of 50/100 points?) Cost for a
support card 200 points (200/5=40(!) points every stand). Cost of a Company
600 (say...50, points for company HQ?)
 
The only BUT anybody can throw to me is, that you have to purchase a
Primarch, but you had to purchase greater demons anyway, no? Except from the
special power, all CM are the same with these rules, so with a medium army
(4k+) you get some of them.
 
Isn't it beautiful?
 
I think we should use Chaos Space Marine Army cards instead of old ones. I
think there were some Chaos Space Marine army rules in NetEpic 3. I think
they should be used instead of these ones. Or use SM cards as CSM, so a
tactical Chaos Space Marine company would be equal to a loyal tactical
marine company, but, that's true, without a special power.
