I have not found this to be a strict rule of thumb. Of course, in some
instances smaller detachments will die very quickly, but they have
their purpose in allowing you to be more flexible in your tactics,
usually. Most of my detachment recently have been 350 to 450 points
and have worked quite well. I rarely go over 500 as this starts
getting a bit unwieldy on most battlefields.

Could you describe the house rules? When you say morale was suspended,
are you just saying that you didn't bother tracking army morale, or do
you mean something else?

There were

I would love to see a rundown on the exact composition of your three
detachments and how well each of them did.

I've found that Marines don't really need titans. Their infantry and
tanks (particularly the LR) are good enough that they can hold their
own. The IG would be more hard pressed. Ork gargants are really
useful for Orks to have, particularly Warboss gargants. I don't think
Chaos really needs titans either, but Scott would know better. What
were you facing in terms of titan-class vehicles, anyway?

Absolutely, fire it up!
