Well technically they did, because she was trying to get away from them.
But what really killed her was:
1) She was wearing no seatbelt
2) The car was travelling at 120mph
3) The driver was way above the legal alcohol limit.

I think most of it is 'hatred' in the same way that the Scots (that's
us!) 'hate' the English- most of us are well-balanced enough not to, but
there are always some people who are a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
