I like small detachments.
First they are numerous : I think it's better to have 4 or 5 small
detachments instead of 2 or 3 big ones, your can set up a more
flexible strategy.
In addition, you can hide your small detachments much easier than
your big ones.
In top of that, if you lose one small detachment it won't be so
terrible as it's only a little part of your army.

But, there is a but :
Don't make too small detachments, I think that 200 to 300 points
detachments are the best. Under 200 points the detachment is very weak
and then must be a very specialised detachment.
I use one of 115 points :
2 Land Speeders (one is the HQ)
        5 Attack Bikes
It's very fast and has a enough fire points : 14. I used this
detachment in suicide attacks to cover the advance of my other
detachments.

One example of one of my "small" detachments :
Space Marine Captain in Land Raider
2 squads of Devastators + Rhinos
1 squad of Tactical Space Marines + Rhino
1 Land Raider

This detachment worked good ; it doesn't look too big so my opponent
thinks that it's not dangerous... until I give it an Overwatch
order... :)
