You managed to send your subscribe message to the list itself,
not to the server. Here's a quote from a message from the server:
To subscribe, send a mail to Majordomo_at_... with the commands:
subscribe space-marine
help
end
in the mail body.
Is WPI the school in Worcester, MA? Are you in Worcester itself?
