I've never personally tried it, but I hear "Pine-Sol" does a great job
of stripping paint without being toxic.

You could also soak your figures in acetone (nail polish remover), but
only if they are not plastic.

Gasoline, while highly flammable, has a smell that many people find
agreeable, and is good at dissolving just about anything (except metal).

Try Pine-Sol first, maybe
