[Epic] General overview

Hello all,

I have been reading through the latest house rules threads, and have seen a
lot of back and forth on the LOS issue.

I tend to think that due to the scale of this game LOS should be determined
on a detachment level and not a unit by unit level. Not to say that if one
unit have broken cover the whole detachment has LOS, but if the majority of
one detachment can see the majority of the other detachment then LOS is
established. Remember that in firefights you can't pick out single units to
kill, it is by closest unit first.

For you realism buffs, one Epic turn lasts the length of a short skirmish
between two companies of troups, so as the turn progress the companies lay
fire into the enemy position, not picking individual troops but the whole
force. So, if a unit of marines is hiding behind a tank, then as the
skirmish continues and that tank gets wasted, stray round and heavy weapons
will get to the hiding unit. The question of whether those strays actually
hit and kill the hiding unit is determined by the accuracy and firepower of
the agressor. Back to game terms, you roll enough hits when firing into a
detachment and you will eat through the first ranks and get units towards
the back of the force.

Maybe I am just a little naive, or play with a nicer crowd, but we seem to
be able to agree 95% of the time whether a detachment has LOS or not.

The next subject I saw a lot of is artillery. The armies that have it are
called cheesy because of them and the ones that don't spend a great deal of
time figuring and painting and worrying about how to beat them. Seems to me
that a dedicated thread about them might be warranted.

I play Space Marines, and as such have no long range artillery. I know I
can easily include Guard troops, but that would weaken my force from its
primary goal. As a DA player I have one Ravenwing Company that I use for
artillery hunters, but it seems a weak answer to a force with a 90+ range.
I have spent a lot of my time figuring how to spread my detachments out to
maximum dispersion to avoid getting halk a single detachment caught under a
template. I also have a deathwing company that seems to be a favorite
target of long range atrillery. Their save ability increases their
survivablity, but still it doesn't take much to take this company down to
half strength.

What to do as DA player in case of Artillery:

-Use Ravenwings to out speed the barrages and attack the Arties
-Soak fire from the Arties with Deathwing as other troops flank and attack
-Thunderhawks, thunderhawks, thunderhawks

Of players of other races or armies have ideas post to the thread and we
can see if the long range artillery is really something to fear.

against the best interest of our armies.
