Legionary tactic. To protect yourself and your friends from bowfire, you
raised your shield into the air, as did your friends, thus creating the
turtle ('testudo'). Bowfire could not penetrate. This was only used
against fortresses for obvious reasons, but supposedly it was highly
effective.
