For the record, the current TO&E for a "Heavy Division" of the US Army
includes a total of 4 brigade HQ units, 3 land & 1 "Air Cav". You are
correct in that the Battalions are assigned to the brigades on an ad-hoc
basis, however that assignment seems, at least in the units I dealt with
in USAEUR, faily permanent. That could be side effect of being a
peace-time army. As far as GW goes, well, I will grant you that at one
time they did seem to know what was what, and would put it in to their
rule, but of late,well, as I would say in the office, "Col. Mustard, In
the bedroom, with the Knife". Now you have a clue...
