I could see Artillery + Marines being a tough combination to beat. I
tried this once and didn't get much out of it, but I was only using
three normal artillery guns. I like to try everything once, btw, just
because the battlefield and the book seem to give different views on
units.

Well, first off I would never mix the 'special' Marine troops in an
army unless I were actually fighting a gigantic (20,000 point) battle
with all the chapters on the field. The Death Company and the Space
Wolves are quite potent and shouldn't be taken in combination without a
proper scenario. IMHO the Ravenwing is of questionable utility, but I
also wouldn't field this unless I were playing Dark Angels.

Before I played my first game, I sat down and wrote out my Chapter's
history (The Shadow Skulls). They have no special abilities, but
they're mine. I have their roster in a spreadsheet, company by company
which shows me what I still need to complete my collection (A LOT!).
Until then, I paint them up according to the roster, with the proper
company colors and I don't generally field detachments split over
several companies.

I would like to also just field marines, but I don't see anything wrong
with mixing the two from time to time. It is within the bounds of the
background and the army list. Finally, my collection of models
virtually requires that I field some of my allies if I want to fight a
2,000 point battle without fielding lots of land raiders and whirlwinds
(something I consider over the top).
