RE: Chaos cards (was: RE: [NetEpic ML] An idea for Slann Mechs)

Hi!

I like this. I think cards from all armies are one of the sources of
most questions I handle on and off list. While chaos cards engender the
majority of questions I get my share of Ork and tyranid questions too.

I agree that ALL cards need be classified into:

What it effects- we need to eliminate ambiguous wording like "unit" and
say SPECIFICALLY what it effects and what it DOESN'T

Offensive versus defensive- this would be good to implement as well.
Sometimes people ask if "x" power can do this or that. Categorizing them
as offensive of defensive gives you a good idea (defensive are those you
cast on your units and can't cast on others, offensive would be the
opposite).

Physical versus non-physical- Specifically categorize each power (not
only cards but other powers too) if powers allow psi-saves and which
don't as well as those that ignore shields.

This may add a whole section to each book describing each power and
effects, but its worth it.

On a related note, I think we should harmonize the whole card system.
What we have now is a huge list at the end of the Chaos book of what
affects what and why. IMO there should be a classification of all the
card powers to a couple of broad categories, just like the psychic
powers are, to determine whether psychic saves etc. apply.

Here's a suggestion: at a glance all the powers seem to be in two broad
categories: those which affect the chaos forces themselves and those
which affect enemy units. They could be classified as offensive (those
which are played directly on enemy units) and defensive (those which are
played on the chaos units themselves). Psychic saves would save from
offensive but not defensive powers.

Rationale: even though some "defensive" powers harm others (like
uncontrollable flatulence or spits acid for example) the harm really
comes from the material effect of the chaos magic, not from the magic
itself. The spits acid, for example, magically gives some model the
ability to spit acid at the enemy. Even though the source of this
ability is magical the acid is still acid, not some psychic ectoplasm or
whatever. The same goes with the uncontrollable flatulence; the magic
affects the chaos thingy's digestive system but the, erm, product of the
magic is still very normal, if unpleasant.

What do others say? I confess I have never played Chaos (and probably
will never play) so I may be completely off the track.
