I also have the Battles book and used the special characters from time to time a while back. My gaming group also made a lot of other special characters. Also playing RPG I even invented a random special character generator based on the stats given in the Battles book.

We used these for a while but came to the conclusion that they where all way too cheesy and had too much impact on the game. Including the GW made characters. I think special characters are for 40K only.
