I use 7/8" (22mm) square ceramic tiles as bases. It gives my troops a heavy
base that tends to hit the ground first, and I don't have to get my grubby
fingers on the models themselves - everything can be picked up by the base,
thus saving the delicate bits. It also gives my models about 2mm of height and
a dense-packed feel to my troops - a psychological advantage only, but an
advantage still.
