If you go back to the roots of the Slann, say Warhammer ed. 1-3 it is pretty obvious that the Slann ARE the Ancients, or what preceded the Ancients ALL Epic races are Slann experiments or new arrivals. But the (current) Slann have fallen a long way ( or become disinterested if you prefer).
