We made, long ago, a lot of craters from burned (with glue or a heated
metal) polysterene. We had a range from 1 to 18 cm craters. We only place
craters when there's a reactor meltdown or similar. In other cases, we
suppose there has not been that big explosion; maybe the crew was
incapacitated to operate the vehicle or simply dead, the vehicle was
effectively destroyed without a big "boom" or just stopped working until it
could be repaired at the end of the battle. We never leave "carcasses"
(destroyed vehicles) on the battlefield to avoid errors (like placing orders
for them which also confuses your opponent). Although if we had time
(sigh...) it would be nice to waste some minis to make smoking carcasses...
A Leviathan carcass is still, a good cover for infantry and small
vehicles...
