Hi,
This is unrelated to current topic but I played Tau recently and I
find there's a problem with their troops - Fire warriors.
Fire warriors have
- 10cm move (normal)
- -1 CAF (little drawback understandable, being Tau, but nothing
overwhelming)
- A standard gun 50cm 4+ 0 (excellent to-hit roll, understandable
once again)
- A special ability giving them the possibility of rerolling failed
ranged attacks under special circumstances.
Oh my!
The latest is really a problem IMHO. Rerolling a base to-hit roll of
4+ means that three of four shots will hit against an incoming
opponent (especially in assault, when fire warriors are hiding in a
building). This is incredible compared to other Epic infantry stands.
Tau fire warriors are incredible on the defense - four Tau stands
will easily wipe out even Eldar assault specialists like Scorpions
and Banshees, survivors being against superior odds. Their -1 CAF is
not a problem since after the shooting phase there are little
opponents left to assault anyway.
Sure, you can always launch barrage after barrage on the building
fire warriors are hinding into, but I find a bit annoying that you
really can't assault a race supposed to be weak in CC!!
I suggest that the "reroll failed ranged attack" rule is downgraded a
bit. Or a lot.
For example, Fire Warriors could either have a to-hit base of 5+ and
not 4+ (so with the reroll it would be equivalent to a 3+, which is
already quite insane). Better, we could use for Tau the same ability
than Squat in CC, ie. rerolling ranged to-hit rolls of 1 (or 1-2 on
certain circumstances)
I think that with such changes a base cost of 25 per stand would be
justifed then (25 being "slightly better than IG" and we are far from
that!!) Currently, they are underpriced IMHO.
I played a game with current version of Tau and I really felt sorry
for my opponent, which hadn't fielded tons of artillery. Once I
managed to took the city center (and easily wipe out his few barrage
laying units) he could do n*o*t*h*i*n*g. In ranged attacks, Tau
outmatched him. In close combat, Tau killed off assaulters before the
fight.
