unit / detachment clarification

hi there,

its my first post and maybe the questions sound a bit silly but i was
not able to find a clear answer in the core rules.

is a unit always a detachment no matter what size it may have?
 
perhaps someone would be so kind to clarify the exact difference
between model/unit/detachment and how they relate in spells for the
noobie :)
