I have looked into this extensively. I now own a Tau army but I went down the route of Forgeworld Tanks and Fliers with DRM infantry. The problem lies in the fact that the Tau tanks look fairly unique with their hammerhead design. But here is a pretty comprehensive list of decent Tau proxies:
