Exodite Models vs. Unit Cards

I am somewhat confused by the relationship between
the current NetEpic Exodite list and the original models that inspired 'em.

I seem to remember that the current list grew out of proxies,
rather than the GW models (as these were deemed unavailable):
Is that right?

As one of the few that actually Owns the GW Exodites,
I am finally getting around to painting them,
and am interested in playing with them asap-

Any Help appreciated-
