While the current "codex" SM chapter set up is based loosely on the old
Roman legions, their rank structure is a bit nebulous. the progression
is generally as follows: Scout (all rookies start here), then Marine.
From Marine, the individual finds his MOS, be it assault, tactical,
devastator, or a specialist like Librarian, Chaplain, Tech-marine, or
Medic. Librarians have their own seniority structure, and chaplains are
just chaplains. For those in the regular line troops, it goes from
Marine to Sargeant, then Lieutenant, then Captain, Lt. Commander, then
Commander, and ultimately Chapter Master. then there are the support
services types, such as flight crews, armorers and artificers, though
most of these can be handled by non-marine chapter personel.
