My two cents on this selective pinning thing:

First of all, when two units engage in close combat they would just charge
directly at each other, if a soldier cant reach a certain target because his
friends are standing in the way, they'd charge someone else.

If everyone was running towards the same target, they would be annihilated
with boltpistols, grenades and flamers. Remember, close combat represents
close quarter fighting as well.

Also, most armies are very aggresive and would not consider selective
pinning or partial engagements at all.

Orks, chaos and propably tyranids would just throw themselves at the enemy,
trying to fight and kill as many as possible.

Seing a marine standing over there shooting?
Get da zock over dere and stomp 'is skull ! !

Also, the troops would (in reality, not in the game rules) be firing on each
other as they are closing, this fire would be towards opportunity targets
and distributed pretty randomly as each soldier tries to neutralize threats
to himself and his unit.

This fire is also counted into the resolution of the close combat.
