Hi!

It means the the snap firng detachment fires as many attack dice as it has (6 in your example) towards the target. Thus in your example, the space marine player would roll 6 dice to try to effect the orks. In essence even with extraordinary luck the tactical detachment can't hope to wipe out all 8 orks (it has only 6 attack dice in total), but it would severaly reduce the close combat odds the orks would have otherwise enjoyed.
