Okay, i agree that these things are not satisfying, but remember that 40K
now intends to cover larger conflicts between units of troops rather than
individual soldiers.

For example, grenades give an advantage in assault combat because thats
where they are used.
Also, cover DOES matter. Cover saves are gold for IG and orks and even
heavier troops when under fire from heavy weaponry.
It also gives advantages in assaults.

Also, when playing on a higher level, the exact placement of an individual
soldier is not very important, but the placement of the squad is. It is
mostly a matter of perspective.
