In Australia a Regimental Serjant Major is a Warrent Officer (The highest
Non Commisioned rank) who is incharge of Battalion discipline and basically
answers to no-one in such matters.
On a training course a couple of years ago (I work for Telstra), two
instructors entered the room. You could tell immediatley that they were ex
Warrent Officers (In Vietnam as it turned out). The nearest thing to an IG
commisar that I have ever met, or can think of. (After prompting from a
house mate, we think that RSM payne won a VC)
