I don't know about historical, but our local New Varangian =
Guard (A
Byzentine re-enactment group) is currently working on a Kataphract=
i (sp?)
unit. Basically, Scale armor over Chain armor over a Gambeson. Ar=
med with
sword and kite shield. No horse's though, too hard to do any fight=
ing).
With an average size of about 6' and weight of about 100Kg, we're ref=
ering
to them as the Tanks. A flying wedge from these guy's will punch thr=
ough
anybody.
No horses? wow, you guys gotta be really strong. (At that we=
ight, I wouldn't call it a flying wedge, maybe Hammer would be more apropri=
ate:) To be on topic a Cataphract was a Robot in first ed warhammer. I thin=
k it had a Thunderhammer and a heavy weapon, but I'll have to check. Kataph=
ract was the ork version :).
