I think GW now is in somewhat the same position TSR was in the 80's:
Established as the big dog in one area of gaming, lots of minor
competition, but no real threat. You can expect that every con
will have GW events, and even people who aren't into it are aware
of it (in game circles, anyway). I think of lot of net traffic & this
list
have taken the role of the old dragon- "here's what I did" reports,
new ideas, alternates to the official word, etc.
How long will it last...?
Personally, the biggest complaint I have against GW is their prices. If GW
were to field cheap stuff(or better, if most minitures were plastic, which
IMHO is easier to paint anyway, as well as being cheaper) they would do a
lot better. Most gamers I know like to get the biggest army they can
afford, and then some. I think they would attract more people it you didn't
need 200+ just to start an army. For instance they produce cheap plastics
in the boxed sets. I have seen places where you can get the the Brettonian
or Lizardman sets from the Fantasy 5th edition boxed set for 20$+s&H. These
here are a good start to an army. (I'm using this instead of the E40K sets
because I've never seen a price for them.)
