My God, you saw the effect of this discussion on the newsgroups
and still asked it?!!!
Having said that though I'll delurk to add my two cents, and
perhaps, fuel to the fire. I didn't touch this thread on the newsgroups as
it quickly descended into personal insults and so on, which I trust won't
happen here, and suspect so does Chris which is why he asked in the
first place.
Anyway with respect to the boardgame, miniature game, computer
game variations I would say that, yeah, they're all 'part' of the the same
hobby - wargaming (but IMO the three are aimed at three different groups
of gamers). No doubt historical miniatures gamers would argue with
that. Anyone else notice that its the puritan historical gamers that have
the biggest problem about defining their hobby and deciding whether
to 'let' fantasy and sci-fi be a part of wargaming. No offence to historic
gamers, I'm one too, and most are pretty easy going.
With respect to miniatures games, if you're not into miniatures
then why not just play counter-based boardgames. Sure you can play
miniatures games with counters but I think this defeats the purpose.
Miniatures gaming is a very visual thing for me, I like to get down to
ground level and see the mini's through the trees and peeking from round
buildings and so on. As such I like painted armies and terrain, they add
to the feel of the whole game.
I don't refuse games from people without painted armies, that
would be pretty rude I reckon, many of mine aren't painted either. I do
however get very frustrated when you see the same army month after month
and the owner hasn't made any effort to even try painting it. I feel like
they're missing out on something. And if they feel they're not missing out
on anything I 'd have to ask 'why are you playing miniatures games
then?'.
Thanks,
Tony.
