After seeing Sean's report of his friend Dan's Chaos bubble formation I
decided to share the formations our group has worked out.
For orcs
My friend Matt uses several cults of speed with 9 or 10 battlewagons each
and then buys an equal number of detachments with 9 or 10 stands of boyz
and nobz. We play using the CJ article on infantry using tanks for cover.
Since he uses 4 or 5 of each detachment it makes it very difficult to
suppress his army. If you shoot the hell out of one detachment it is only
a very small part of his army. Also if the orc player mixes his troops up
a bit his opponet runs into the very frustrating problem of having a bunch
of orcs to shoot at but only 2 or 3 stands from any one detachment being in
range. Only do this if you can tell the detachments appart easily.
For IG
IG Horde
Use the IG infantry detachments in very small numbers. Take three
detachments of IG infantry with one commander (plus phyker) and 3 squads
(six units) of IG infantry and then 3 demolishers/ogrins each. Deploy the
tacs in a mixed line. One from each detachment next to each other. Mix in
the Ogrins as you go, put the Demolishers and Phyker/commanders in a line
behind them. If you get CC'ed or firefought all three detachments should
be able to contribute, if you get shot at only 1/3 of your force gets BMs.
The objective of this force is to trundle forward and get shot, while your
Arty, WE and bombers hammer the opponet.
Also for Anti-air work for the IG, skip the hydras use a det of IG infantry
with Sentinals for support and put them in a box around your arty group.
You can usually group your Arty pretty tight and with the numbers of
Sentinals you can get you can easily make a three sided box
(side, back, side) 20 cms away from your arty group. You may have to use 2
detachments if you want to keep them in command, but since snap-fire will
work even without being in command and since your arty isn't likly to move
around all that much it isn't neccisary.
The whole army would look like this: Front line the IG horde with WE on
each flank, slowly moving forward. Then the Arty in a box backing them up.
This creates a very slow but tough to stop force. Take a Det of Mechinized
infantry or a bunch of Rough Riders + hellhounds to run around and respond
to enemy threats.
If you are using the "meeting engament" style of set up this will take till
the end of turn 2 to deploy properly so if your opponet can hit you in turn
one or assault you in the assault phase of turn two you will have to take
some "quick reaction" type of force. I find that bombers work well, just
blow the hell out of whatever is threating you.
