Considering the relative differences in distance account for the price
variance, what gives?

Exactly, this was the bit that got me the most unexpectedly when I worked it out. Being a Kiwi myself and having lived in Australia for two years I had always assumed that once prices had been translated they would work out the same, or if anything NZ would be slightly more expensive as it is with most other prices. This is even weirder when you consider the NZ price has a 12 1/2% Goods and Services Tax added, similar to VAT, whilst in Australia we have nothing like that. The other thing that makes it puzzling is that all the NZ supplies are shipped via the Australian Warehouse so must cost at least as much, but logically slightly more in transportation.
