NO. This is an oversight, that is not explained clearly in the books.
The det HQ is part of the main force when he is just the additional
point cost for HQ. So, if you have 30 Leman Russ or 10 Heavy
Artillery; The additional HQ unit is part of that main force. In
instances of squads, it is the individual model that is the HQ, and
not the squad/squadron.

  In review: No more than 10 lines of main force equipment.

This question may seem odd, but I recently faced IG Artillery dets
with
eleven Artillery pieces (no Griffons). 1 as HQ, ten in main force. Is
this
allowed? Same question: can you have ten or eleven T-hawks in one
flyer
det? 30 or 31 Leman Russ in a tank det? This is very important to
Eldar
Armies with their small det size as well.

In other words: Does a unit which is upgraded to HQ still occupy its
main
force/support slot or not?
