--------> Trying to use a historical unit as a theme is fine (and it's
not like the IG aren't steered in that direction anyway), but in this
neck of the woods that;s usually not the idea - more below

In various wargames (ASL, etc) the Germans are often the most popular
side to play. That's what got me started, and in many late-war scenarios
it's that whole "elite well equipped few holding back the tide" thing,
which may be why I like marines in epic, but see below.
(The SS also had those cool white on black counters in the original
version of Squad Leader, so I've felt the attraction...)

Heh. I wonder sometimes...

--------> If I can tell from the paint job it's a Waffen SS-modelled
army, cool. If it's just a bunch of troops painted black with swastikas
everywhere , it's just a pathetic 13 yr old trying to impress someone or
ripe for a white-supremacist recruiter to stop by. May seem unlikely but
remember gamers are kind of a fringe crowd (here at least) and sometimes
cross over into other fringe groups, whether the relatively harmless
(though annoying) vampire/goth/anne rice-ophile crowd or something
nastier. This is Texas, where some nuts think we were annexed illegally
by the U.S. start shooting feds and call themselves "patriots".
People can be a bit touchy here, and a lot of it is legit. The
closest analogue to the swastika locally is the Confederate "stars &
bars" flag which for some people is a source of pride/history, for
others a symbol of oppression. Schools have had to change their mascot
from a "rebel" (Southern soldier) to something more acceptable because
some people object to it. A person's miniatures are their own and not
public property, but if someone locally plans to play in stores or with
people who aren't good friends, and paints up a swastika-laden army then
whatever the rationale I'd say they were more interested in making
trouble than playing the game. I've seen a guy go way overboard on a
WH40K army this way a while back and I'm sure it could happen again.

-------> No offence here either. We've all built a model of the Bismark
or an ME-262, right? I'd just advise restraint and good sense when
dabbling in this area as a theme is great, historical interest is great,
but if it's just shock value, the game isn't the main focus anymore...
