I live in New Zealand, about 1200 miles east of Australia.
Confusing the two within earshot of a Kiwi elicits a
similar response to the one you get from confusing a
Canadian with someone from the United States.

Personally, as I'm an Englishman (and by definition cannot
be a foreigner anywhere in the world) I don't care as both
Aussies and Kiwis are just "colonials" :-)

Oops, I think I just got us back onto the racial
superiority thread ;-)
