According to latest GW fluff (from GorkaMorka) Orks are a symbiotic
organism combined with algae. They breed by giving of spores some of
which turn into fungus, squigs, snotlings, gretchin, orks(later
cvreatures in coocoons what they turn into depends on distance from
an Ork settlement and conditions where they land, seem to say
coocons only form in out of wind shadowy place or was it the vortex
formed on rocks out of the wind, my memomry fails me). They
supposedly hatch or whatever in that order so food comes first,
someone to tend the food , gretchin to start remidial work, orks
after. According to this if an Ork dies as it decomposes it gives of
spores. Thus 1 dead ork can given time colanise a whole plannet. The
reason for the green skin is supposedly the algae in the bloodstream,
maybe that even needs photosynthesis anyway so they have chlorphyl
pigments anyway.
