My understanding was that a regular infantry stand was considered to include
one heavy weapon, and this one heavy weapon (heavy bolter, autocannon, whatever)
was what was causing the "shooting" damage. In the case of heavy troops, every
guy on the stand has one of these, and they are probably of the higher quality
types (lascannon, missle launcher, etc.) and so have a longer range, more dice,
and a save mod. This fits in with 40K squads fairly well, which was probably
the original intention.
