In reference to the new player, I can offer some very general advice,
which may save you or kill you in your next battles.
First, I play mostly Marines with a small Imp. Guard force for
artillery/cannon fodder/tank companies. A really good rule of thumb for
marines is put them somewhere you like, and stop. Their rapid fire
ability can absolutely decimate your opponent. I played against tyranids
today, and in a single firing phase I rolled over 20 dice against a
detatchment of termangants, carnifi, and tyranid warriors and rendered
them useless. Double fire power and rerolls on overwatch are almost
unstoppable.
As far as Imp. Guard go, us the tanks. Leman Russ companies with Griffon
and Hellhound support units can work wonders. 10 Leman Russ tanks provide
you with a whopping 30 firepower with armor values of 6. Very Nice.
Basically, the only good way to learn the strategy is to know your forces.
If you know what your weaknesses and strengths are, you can help to
protect and promote them. You should also have a basic knowledge of your
enemy as well. There are some basic strategies for all races, learn them.
You can't always count on them, but they do give you a good idea on how to
fight them.
Just my 2 cents.
