Death Rays hit on a 2+ and automatically cause a crit on
War Engines. Vortex Missiles (which is what an Imperial Deathstrike
fires - perhaps you're confusing all these Death-related names?)
laydown a barrage template that automatically hits everything
underneath with D6 Death Ray hits (or Anti-Tank hits if you're using
the alternate rules proposed in White Dwarf). However, Death Rays
do not ignore shields - if you hit a shielded titan with a DR, it
loses a single shield; if you hit it with a Vortex, it loses D6
shields and if it doesn't actually have that many shields the
difference is carried over to the titan itself. IIRC, the Ork
super-lifta droppa and the Eldar distortion cannon are the only
weapons that ignore shields.
