I plan detatchments first and then paint.

Often I discover a need for some unit during a battle and by the next time
we play I have a company of whateveer ready.

I always paint my infantry on their bases.

It's true that it is a bit crowded, but I figure if you can't get a brush to
the spot you want to paint you probably can't see it either...
