I agree with others that you should take a look into Epic 40K before
dismissing it. There are people on this list who dislike it, but tons of
people, including many of us who were 2nd edition players, who love it.

Several of us have found a pattern, where someone initially looks at the
game, thinks it is dumbed down way too much, objects to shorter weapons
ranges, and hates the system, but then after playing a bit, come to
appreciate Epic 40K more than the older version. (Not everyone, but I know
several of us thought we'd only be using E40K minis, but now use the rules.)

I don't have a problem with flavor lost. There are some ways that flavor is
improved, others it may have suffered. I think there is plenty of flavor,
it just is in different areas. I don't think there are many expansions I'd
use from E41K, but if I wanted to, I could.

You may end up preferring 2nd edition. (Last I looked, there was a store
near me selling some of the army rule boxes at 50% off, but not the main
set.) But don't just assume that E40K isn't any good. I think it's great.

Many people do like Netepic, but I found that it was increasing the kinds of
stuff I wanted to avoid. I actually originally bought Space Marine as a big
box of minis and terrain for Dirtside II, by Ground Zero Games. The basic
game rules of Space Marine were simpler than DSII, however, so I stuck with
it. As I bought the army boxes and Titan Legions, the set of rules got
larger, and I have the impression that NetEpic pushes it past my level of
interest. Epic40K has more complicated basic rules, but doesn't get worse
from there, IMO.

Good luck, and have fun.
