Brett, I must admit that this is a radical interpretation of the rules.
However, I do like the outcome of your proposed interpretation (fewer
CC deaths by Titans to infantry) and I admire your tenacity in pursuing
a response. Now that I'm done complimenting you, I have to say that
your interpretation is inaccurate in its application of the pinning
rules. I just checked the TL rulebook, which states that models are
pinned when they enter into CC. "Normally when a model moves into
close combat with another model both models are said to be 'pinned'".
Close combat is the criterion, not base to base contact. The only way
that a model would be pinned at the base would be if the Titan engaged
it in CC, which would then allow it to contribute to the multiple
attacker bonus. <sigh> I wish I were wrong, and if you can come up
with some reason that I'm wrong, I would be more than glad to listen to
you. As one of the Titan fans on the list, I want to see them pumped a
bit.
At this point, I would like to propose a possible house rule to be
tested. I feel that Titans (and Gargants) should be given a point
defense system similar to that of the Imperator. For those of you
unfamiliar with the Imperator, it has 16 point-defense bolters (range
15cm 6+ 0 save mod) that always fire on FF. These are used to clear
away incoming close assaulting troops and other annoying infantry
targets. Giving other Titans this system (watered down, of course.
About 9 dice for a Warlord, 6 for a Reaver, 3 for a Warhound, for
example) should give them enough of an edge to survive MOST infantry CC
while still allowing for the possibility of a successful infantry
assault. To quote the TL rulebook, "It is just about possible to swamp
a Titan by surrounding it with hordes of more lowly troops, but this is
just as liable to bring about the demise of all the troops involved!"
Currently, a "horde" of five infantry bases (or bikes/jetbikes) is
sufficient to bring down a Titan. I agree that a large number of
troops should be able to drag down a Titan, but 25 men or 10 bikes
doesn't qualify as a large number of troops in my book.
Also, I like the idea that land-bound troops (with the exception of
other Titans, of course) can only attack the lowest line of a Titan's
hit template. I could see jump-pack troops leaping up to the plasma
reactor of a Warlord and planting meltabombs, but no one else.
Just my two cents.
