Heres one way to explain stormtroopers of WWI.
Picture a wave attack from one trench to another.
In the front row of this attack you have large German men with the
steel gun shields off of machine guns strapped to their arms like in the
middle ages. In their right hands they are swinging sharpened shovels,
picks, etc. In their wake you have guys wearing large satchels of grenades.
These men pause from time to time to throw explosives into the trenches ahead
and any occupied occupied shell crater along the way. These troops which
lead the other attacking forces are the stormtroops.
