Nothing too herectic about that. In WH40K GW are always encouraging people to
make conversions (it sells more bits) and make up "specials." Somehow that sort
of thing is unconsciously discourages by Epic's army lists (even SM2 more than
E40K, to my mind). Truth is we should happily make all sorts of adaptions and
specials and adapt the rules to fit the specials.

Orks particularly should be into these things.
